KEAN International is an international non-profit organization dedicated to advancing climate and environmental leadership across Afrika and collaborating with the global community. Established in 2020 and fully registered as a non-profit in 2024, KEAN (Kheri Environmental Action Network) derives its name from the Swahili word ‘Kheri,’ meaning ‘Goodness.’ This reflects our commitment to promoting transformative change in climate action, environmental regeneration, and community resilience. We empower communities, nurture environmental leaders, and implement innovative solutions to address climate change and ecosystem degradation.

KEAN International has spearheaded several impactful campaigns and initiatives, including:

  • #AfrikaIsNotADumpster: Challenging global narratives and promoting Afrikan-led solutions to environmental challenges.
  • Afrika Youth Caravan: Empowering young Afrikan leaders to participate in global climate negotiations, such as COP.
  • Bustani Gardens: A restoration program focused on regenerative agriculture, conservation, and community resilience.
  • Friends of FMNR: Promoting Farmer-Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR) to restore degraded lands and improve livelihoods.

Technology for Nature-based Solutions (Tech4NbS): Integrating innovative mapping and monitoring tools for ecosystem restoration.

KEAN International is deeply committed to empowering young leaders. Through initiatives like the Afrika Youth Caravan to COP, Change School Summit, and National Youth Consultation Conferences, we provide platforms for youth to engage in climate discussions, share ideas, and participate in global negotiations. We also offer training, mentorship, and opportunities for young leaders to implement local solutions and advocate for policy changes.

 

Since its launch in 2020, KEAN International has achieved significant milestones, including:

  • Launching the #AfrikaIsNotADumpster campaign to challenge harmful narratives and promote Afrikan solutions.
  • Hosting the UNFCCC Local Conference of Youth and organizing the Afrika Youth Caravan to COP to amplify youth voices.
  • Implementing the Bustani Gardens program to restore ecosystems and promote regenerative agriculture.
  • Piloting the Friends of FMNR initiative to advance sustainable land management practices.
